We see social media stars every day — often many times a day. They’re the people we follow on Instagram and Twitter, people who seem to have it all — good looks, expensive clothes, perfect manicures, hot cars, long, luxurious hair, and the freedom to roam in the most beautiful backdrops in the world. They lounge by bright blue pools, kick back on sandy beaches, post from exclusive night clubs, and they’re always on top of the latest fashions. Guess what. It’s not all that it seems to be.

More goes into making a social media star than you would think. But then, it’s their job to make it look easy. There’s a dark side to it, though. When fame can actually be quantified in terms of “likes” and “followers,” it seems that much more attainable, and people will go to further lengths to reach their goals. Now, former social media model Essena O’Neill is drawing back the curtain on “Facebook Fame.” What’s behind the curtain might shock you.

Not long ago, Essena was at the top of her social media game, with more than 580,000 followers on Instagram, 260,000 subscribers on YouTube, and another 60,000 on Snapchat.

The 18-year-old blonde beauty from Australia made waves posing in expensive clothing next to swimming pools, beaches, and waterfalls. Her job was to look good, and she did it well.

Almost overnight, she turned around and deleted more than 2,000 photos and stopped posting on YouTube and Snapchat altogether. She broke down and, soon after, started up with social media again, but with a new purpose: to expose the reality behind social media.

She went back to Instagram and renamed her account Social Media Is Not Real, and re-captioned many of her photos with a startlingly honest look behind the scenes of her photo shoots.

Her new captions reveal the life she lived as an Instagram model, a life she found unfulfilling and misleading for her followers.

For many of her posts, she noted that she had been paid to promote products, so her followers were effectively seeing ads without realizing it.
