Rats are being Genetically Modified to sniff out Land Mines for Army

After the successful experiment on mice, scientists are given a new project in which they have to modify rats genetically to sniff out land mines for army.

It has been reported that the scientists are funded by the Department of Defence for developing this ‘super sniffing’ rats.

The project is given to them after they (scientists) developed mice that can be programmed to detect some specific smells.

A scientist from the team, explains “Mammal’s noses have a large collection sensory neurons and each of them is equipped with ‘receptors’ or ‘sensors’ to detect specific smell”.

“And by increasing the presence of receptor, they (mammals) can detect some specific smell more powerfully”, he adds.
