Released around two months ago, the album made this week another 375,000 units. Total sales of it have exceeded 3.36 million units as of now. With this 1989 has become the second best-selling album this year.
Taylor Swift’s this album has been on the number one position for six non-consecutive weeks in past eight weeks. It sold 331,000 copies and 433,000 songs, but it is surprising the album has no stream sale. In fact the singer has protest streaming sites and even pulled out her catalog from Sppotify.
On the second position is Minaj’s The Pinkprint. The album debuted this week and grabbed a sale figure of 194,000 albums, or 244,000 “units” sold.
Meanwhile, Billboard has made some changes in bringing out the top list. It now counts 10 songs as equal to one album unit and similarly counts 1,500 online streams equals to one album unit. It is said this method of counting and making the chart represent a more realistic music consumption.
However, it is to take note that album sales have been on a steady slip and in its place the streaming and downloads have gained popularity.
Last week the topper on Billboard chart was J. Cole’s 2014 Forest Hills Drive. This week it is on the fourth place with 135,000 total sales units.
