The director of the Godzilla movie, Gareth Edwards will be directing the first spin-off of the Star Wars franchise, the British filmmaker has confirmed in a statement.
The director will be working with the British writer Gary Whitta of After Earth and The Book of Eli fame.
Edwards said in his statement that ever since he saw the Star Wars movies, he knew exactly what he wanted to do for the rest of his life – that is joining the Rebel Alliance! He said that he was very excited and also honored to have this opportunity to work on the legendary movie franchise and thanked Lucasfilm for it. Gareth is also touted to return to the director’s chair for the next two sequels of the Godzilla. The production company of the Godzilla praised the director with their Thomas Tull saying that Gareth’s film-making abilities and his creative and visionary genius has made him one of the foremost directors of this generation. He commented that the plan was always for Gareth to make a different film before returning to shoot the Godzilla sequel, but they had no idea that it would be a Star Wars movie.
Lucasfilm was acquired by Disney for $4.05 billion in October 2012. There has been no confirmation regarding which character the new spin-off film will be focusing on, but there is a strong contention that it would be among the three characters from the original trilogy of films shot between 1977 and 1983 – Boba Fett, Han Solo and Yoda.
